Mass and Dimensional Limits for Road Transport

The following links are provided for quick and simple reference to establish what the maximum mass and dimensional limit is for a particular vehicle type for each Australian State.

The Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL) came into effect on the 10 February 2014 is in place in in the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and Victoria. The Northern Territory will commence the HVNL at a later date. Western Australia will not commence the HVNL at this time.

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator will have in place the Heavy Vehicle (Mass, Dimension & Loading) National Regulations. These will seek to nationally align existing jurisdictional regulations and be a reference for access notices, gazettes, permits and exemptions under a consistent regulatory framework.

Mass and Dimensions

Australia has regulated maximum mass and dimensions for differing types of transport vehicles.

Limitations for each Australian State and Territory is based on a set of regulations set-out by the National Transport Commission (NTC), however these limitations for each Australian State can vary.
